Achieving the right amount and voltage of power into your homes and offices for the right functioning of machineries and appliances is very essential. From modifying the voltage fluctuations to minimizing unwanted damages due to electrical faults, power transformers in India are important. And, to understand how transformers are important, it is central to understand the working criteria of these devices – how they operate to supply the right amount of power, bring in constant power, and perform signal matching.
How do transformers function?
When an uneven electric voltage runs through a wire, transformers automatically generate a stable magnetic field to support the fluctuation of voltage. This magnetic field produced depends upon the amount of power supply. Depending upon Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, the transformer works on the principle that the change of flux linkage with time is directly proportional to the induced electromotive force in the conductor or coil. This is because of the voltage change from the primary coil to the secondary coil. The current passed through the preliminary coil is termed as primary current, while that passed through the secondary coil is termed as secondary current. Along with this voltage change, when alternating current passes through the electric coil, there is alternating flux surrounding the coil, which leads to change in flux linkage in the secondary coil, with respect to time. This is the very basic principle on which a transformer works.
How are coil turns related to amount of voltage?
Every primary and secondary coil of a transformer has “n” number of turns. The ratio between the number of turns of the primary coil and those of the secondary coil determines the magnitude of voltage. Therefore, the number of turns within a coil, and the number of coils in a transformer play a very important role in both the transformer and the circuit it is used in, as these are the elements that help to find out the amount of voltage that is being transmitted from the primary coil to the secondary coil all the way through the magnetic field.
After encountering all the various challenges of voltage fluctuations and surplus power supply, transformers serve to deliver flawless and safe supply of power without any fault by regulating the distribution and transmission of power. By eliminating the voltage fluctuations, power outages, line noise, and other such faults, transformers provide ultimate protection against all unwanted errors and smoothen down the functioning of appliances and production processes within a commercial space. While faults within a home or office can be accepted and dealt with, such inconveniences are just unacceptable in larger and more important areas like hospitals or airports. Imagine the pathetic situation in such places in case of a black out! This is why it is very important that constant and safe amount of electricity is supplied at all times. And, this is what transformers are designed for.
